What is Natural Human Movement?

Natural Movement is a physical education system for reclaiming the full range of movement capabilities that humans possess. Throughout the evolution of our species, we humans developed the capacity and skills to interact with our environments in a myriad of ways that led to our thriving both physically and socially. These movements are our birthright and are the foundation for a language of movement that helps us navigate our world. However, modern living has often separated us from our roots, and bit by bit, we’ve lost the ability to move with as much “fluency” as is necessary —not only to participate in activities we’d like, but also to avoid many common ailments, aches, and pains that result from poor movement skills. Natural Movement training rebuilds our movement vocabulary, efficiency, and effectiveness in various types of movement including:

Why Train in Natural Movement?

I use the words “relearn” and “reclaim” referring to the skills we work on because many of these movement patterns are natural to us, and we may have even utilized them quite effortlessly as children. However, many of the norms of modern living have removed us from nature and as a consequence, our bodies have forgotten how to move efficiently. This can lead to many of the ailments that are so common in modern society.

Natural Movement intentions include:

  • To reconnect with our natural environment.

  • To understand and reclaim our full range of natural human movement capabilities.

  • To re-imagine fitness as our natural state

  • To re-imagine exercise as play

  • To find freedom and happiness moving through the world
