Does Change Have to be Cataclysmic?
Does a Catalytic event need to be Cataclysmic?!
When something comes along that inspires or pushes you to change, how do we ride this wave the best?
“Your life is always speaking to you in whispers, guiding you to your next right step. And in many situations, the whisper is also the first warning. It’s a quiet nudge from deep within saying, Hmmm, something feels off. A small voice that tells you, This is no longer your place of belonging. It’s the pit in your stomach, or the pause before you speak. It’s the shiver, the goosebumps that raise the hairs on the back of your neck. Whatever form the whisper takes, it’s not a coincidence. Your life is trying to tell you something. Heeding these signs can open the doors to your personal evolution, pushing you toward your life’s purpose. Ignoring them or sleepwalking through your life, is an invitation to chaos.”
- Oprah Winfrey
I’ve always felt this to be a true and beautiful quote by Oprah, but I want to focus in on one hiccup to this philosophy… in practice how do you know how to heed the signs?!
In modern life we are so conditioned to ignore the subtle signs - we ignore the body, while we are inundating the body with numbing or stimulating agents - caffeine, alcohol (or other drugs), sugar, processed foods, loud music, hyper-busy activity seeking, etc. etc….
None of these things are bad in themselves, but if we’re constantly bombarding our mind and bodies with them… we may be too agitated and out of balance to hear the subtle signs and nuanced signals our body is trying to give us.
In order to get better at navigating our lives from this intuitive level, we first have to learn not how to feel BETTER, but rather how to FEEL better. Get the difference?
When we avoid feeling certain things, we end up diminishing our capacity to feel all things.
So, first things first - experiment with moments of silence, stillness, and space (whatever that means to you.) Listen inwardly for what arises. Become attuned to how your body feels. Even if it feels uncomfortable! The trap is running from, avoiding, or numbing out what feels bad… because after a while, we also lose the ability to follow and pay attention to what feels good…
Then, like any language we learn, it takes practice and some time of listening before we can understand what the words mean. The same is true with the body and the signals your life is sending to you.
The more we practice listening, the less likely the catalytic signs of change will have to become so loud and big that they’re Cataclysmic.
