Falling, BALANCE, and Stability (Part 2: Balance)

  • In Aligned Movement New York, NY (map)

(This is Part 2 of a 3 part series)

Put simply balance is not falling.

Less simply, When we are upright, we are in a constant state of falling. But balance is the ability to begin to fall one way and correct that motion to bring ourselves upright again before falling all the way down. Most of the time, these adjustments are so subtle that we barely noticed them. But for many people, the problem becomes that we lose our ability to quickly make those adjustments as we age. As we start to feel less secure in our balance, it affects how well we perform in our sports, how capable we feel to participate in activities, such as hiking, but it also affects our daily activities, such as walking down the street, without worry of injuring ourselves when we step off the curb.

In this session of the workshop we will explore how the stiffness in parts of our body may contribute to loss of balance, and look at how challenging our balance on a regular basis can increase our ability and our confidence level. Balance is a meta-skill, meaning it can be applied to many aspects of our lives. So with practice, when we feel competent with our balance, we perform better in all the activities we do.

(Registration is for the 3 class series. If you cannot make a session, a recording of the event will be made available)
