This is Part 1 of a 3 part series.
The fear of falling is often cited as one of the main reasons why many of us are hesitant to do challenging activities with our bodies. And with good reason! Especially as we age, falls can lead to injuries that might not only set us back from participating in our normal activities, but in the worst case scenarios can lead to life altering loss of mobility and freedom.
Counterintuitively, it is the fear of falling itself that makes us more liable to fall! Studies have shown that a cautious, careful walking gate actually creates the conditions where it is harder to catch yourself from falling. Likewise, the fear of falling might keep us from doing the very activities that would strengthen our balance and stability, therefore leading to a cycle where we are getting weaker and more prone to fall, and thus our fear of falling increases.
This is why learning to fall well can be a vital skill for long-term health and longevity, as well as maintaining a lifelong enjoyment of your favorite activities!
When we develop the skills and confidence that we can fall without injury then we break the fear cycle that leads to less movement. Then we can begin the journey of finding more balance and stability in our lives through more confident walking, and the willingness to challenge our bodies in ways that keeps them strong for life.
This workshop will be a “non-falling“ falling exploration.
We will start small and explore the ways that the body makes contact with the ground, how to mobilize your parts in order to better protect against injury with impact, and then look at techniques and how to minimize the impact on your body if you ever happen to fall. Finally we will explore how these techniques can be scaled from the softest, most minimal practice to real life circumstances. All are welcome no matter your age or confidence level as everything is scalable to meet your comfort.
“In life, falls are inevitable. What you believe and practice in all your moments prior will determine how you get up from them.”
